Description

The grand events of history are taught and talked about though the more mundane occupy more time than the dramatic turns. The Roman Aqueduct systems are a grand architectural element. They are a symbol of the sheer size of the empire at it’s height. They are one of the factors that allowed their cities to be so large. Without proper running water and also sewage the likelihood of disease go up. The medical side of history is one mundane route of research whose effects are not generally well tied into the rest of the understanding of history.
Take a few what ifs. What if a population is prone to epilepsy and a leader has a sudden change of personality after a particularly bad fit? What if a ruling class likes inbreeding too much and their policy decays along with their ability to produce platelets
? What if a population moves and suddenly has to adopt a new diet that their bodies are not adapted to? What if something as simple as a population’s temperament is looked at? Say one city-state tends toward hard physical work while another tends towards hard mental work.
One applicable thought I have from such inquiries is this – if you want a change in one place , say government for example, rather than expecting direct efforts on government to change it, instead try observing the factors that affect government more than itself and try affecting those areas. People-government relations is one example but this could be abstracted to other areas of conflict.
These thoughts might not be directly about an aqueduct or even this particular aqueduct but it is useful, in thought, to bounce around conventional restrictions.
