Description
The Etymology of the words Female and Male is an interesting one. The first thought from common intuition might think that female simply adds a prefix to male, though the case is not. They both have had similar journeys from Latin through to old French and up to their current form which came about in the times of middle English. Femina/femella and Mas/Masculus in Latin were distinct in their construction. Through their lives into French and across the bridge into being used as English words they intertwined and became more similar. The poetry in the parallel, that these two words make to the archetypes of the sexes male and female being used as the symbols of opposites that are codependent antagonists, is beautiful. The Parallel is the ideal that the tradition of storytelling tends toward for how an individual should strive to change towards the embodiment of both opposites. Jung’s ideas of the Anima and Animus are worth exploring here.
